Catania welcomes diabetologists from across the globe under the CoEHAR flag

On May 30–31, 2025, the international scientific conference “TYPE 2 Diabetes in Internal Medicine Practice: Experience Sharings 1” was held in Catania, at the Romano Palace Hotel, bringing together over 100 specialists from the fields of internal medicine, diabetology, and public health.

The initiative, co-organized by Professor Seyit Uyar, President of the Association of Internal Medicine Physicians (DAHUDER) in Turkey, and CoEHAR (Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction) of the University of Catania, represented an important opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the management of type 2 diabetes.

Over the course of the two-day event, the sessions were structured around four main thematic areas: pathophysiological approach to diabetes, personalized medicine in diabetes care, diabetes and smoking: management, cessation, and harm reduction and complex clinical cases

It was an honor to host this event, which allowed experts from around the world to share their experiences and expertise in diabetes care,” said Professor Riccardo Polosa. “Discussing innovative therapies, personalized medicine, and harm reduction strategies allows us to look forward to a future of higher quality in patient care.”

Among the most appreciated contributions from CoEHAR members were the presentations by Dr. Davide Campagna, Prof. Sandro La Vignera, and Dr. Nino Di Pino, who enriched the program with insightful analyses and highly relevant clinical perspectives.

Dr. Campagna, an expert in internal medicine, illustrated the role of harm reduction strategies in managing diabetes in smokers, highlighting emerging data on the use of reduced-risk alternatives, such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs), within personalized cessation pathways for diabetic patients.

Prof. La Vignera, Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Catania, delved into the interactions between endocrine dysfunctions and metabolic complications in diabetic patients, stressing the importance of an integrated approach between endocrinology and internal medicine for more effective therapy.

Dr. Nino Di Pino, a researcher in the field of diabetology, shared the results of his latest studies on the pathophysiological mechanisms of type 2 diabetes, with particular attention to β-cell dysfunction and the role of insulin resistance in patients with comorbidities.

The conference was moderated by Dr. Lorenzo Arcoria, diabetologist and public health expert.
